If your dog or cat does not think that his medication is as good of an idea as you do, this page is for you.  We have tried to put together some resources and ideas we have learned over the years that keep people in the driver's seat on medication.

First, it might be helpful to adjust your pet to feeding mealtimes, so he is hungry when it is time to medicate.  This will make camoflauging a pill much easier.  He might even just swallow it in a bite of cheese or bread without tasting it at all.  We have good luck with Kraft singles cheese product.  You can tear off a small corner, fold the pill inside and warm it in your hand for a few seconds.  The cheese melts just a little and sometimes is able to hide the odor of the pill.
We have had success many times with Pill Pockets because they will seal around the pill and hide it completely.  It is important to offer an empty Pill Pocket or piece of cheese first so they are not suspicious.

If you have to do it, you can insist that the pill be swallowed.  Click on the link to the Medicating Your Cat video for a short guidance video specific to cats (who are notorious for hating pills).

For dogs, you can usually outsmart them if they are hungry and like the hiding agent enough. They also tend to be less offended if you push something down their throat.   If you still need help, try Giving Your Dog a Pill page on the ASPCA behavior website.

If nothing else works, we will give it for you.  Just ask!
